What does a holding mid / no. 6 do?
The pivot in front of the back four. Balances the team, intercepts central passes, protects the space in front of the box (the most dangerous zone), and receives from the goalkeeper or defence to circulate the ball.

How the holding mid / no. 6 moves
Stays between his own team's lines, offering a safe passing option. Covers the channel left by an overlapping full-back. Rarely crosses the ball line in attack.
Types of holding mid / no. 6
- Deep playmaker (regista): orchestrates from deep, dictating tempo with short and long passing.
- Ball-winner (destruidor): marks, tackles and fills gaps — does not build, protects.
- Double pivot: two players sharing the role, giving extra solidity (classic 4-2-3-1).
Why the holding mid / no. 6 plays there
He is the team's insurance policy. He sometimes faces his own goal specifically to see who is arriving at his back and close transitions before they start.
