What does a box-to-box mid / no. 8 do?
The engine that links defence and attack, arrives in the box to finish, and tracks back to defend. Connects the no. 6 to the no. 10.
How the box-to-box mid / no. 8 moves
Receives with his back to the opposition goal when collecting the ball in midfield — then turns or plays a one-two. Makes diagonal third-man runs into the box.
Types of box-to-box mid / no. 8
- Box-to-box: covers the full length of the pitch, arriving in the penalty area.
- Mezzala: plays wider in the half-space, exploiting the seam between the opposition full-back and centre-back.
- Defensive eight: a deeper no. 8 who helps the no. 6 maintain balance.
Why the box-to-box mid / no. 8 plays there
The no. 8 receives back-to-goal because it pins the opposing holding midfielder: if he is followed, space opens in behind; if he is not followed, the eight turns and attacks front-on. Back-to-goal is a tactical decoy, not passivity.
