What the 4-4-2 solves

Compact and simple to organise: two horizontal lines that shift together, covering the full width. Excellent for a mid-block defence and attacking with a two-striker combination.

Where the 4-4-2 is weak

Loses midfield against a three-man unit (2 v 3 centrally). Wide midfielders must cover enormous distances to track opposing full-backs.

When teams use the 4-4-2

Reactive or transition-based teams, or those who value defensive organisation and a sharp striking partnership.
