The 3-5-2 at a glance

The 3-5-2 lines up three centre-backs, five midfielders — including two wing-backs — and two strikers. Creates superiority in build-up (three CBs + holding mid = always a free man) and uses wing-backs to dominate both wide corridors simultaneously.

What the 3-5-2 solves

Creates superiority in build-up (three CBs + holding mid = always a free man) and uses wing-backs to dominate both wide corridors simultaneously.

Where the 3-5-2 is weak

If both wing-backs push high at the same time, you are left 3 v 3 in behind — dangerous against pacey wingers. Demands exceptional physical output from the wing-backs.

When teams use the 3-5-2

Teams wanting controlled possession through secure build-up and overloads on both flanks. Often used to nullify a two-striker system.
