Compactness (short lines)
Keeping short vertical and horizontal distances between the defensive, midfield and attacking lines — typically 25–35 metres between the first and last.
How it works on the pitch
A compact team leaves no space between its lines for the no. 10 to receive. When defending, all players shift to the ball side (strong side), deliberately leaving the opposite side (weak side) open — because switching takes time, and during that time the block reorganises.
